Canadian hockey legend Wayne Gretzky believes that Washington's Russian forward Alexander Ovechkin will sooner or later break his record for goals in regular NHL championships.

Gretzky has scored 894 pucks in the North American league during his career. Ovechkin has 854 goals. Earlier, the Russian player admitted that the Canadian supports him in the race for the sniper record.

‘It's just a matter of time - at the end of this year, early next year, any time. I mean, he's a great player. He's a great scorer. Look at guys like Brett Hull, Mario Lemieux, Mike Bossy. They never missed a shot on goal. If you miss, you can't score. Ovie, Bossy, Jari Kurri, Brett Hull - they never miss a goal. And that's what separates a great scorer from good scorers.’
In the current NHL season 39-year-old Ovechkin played 4 games for Washington, in which he scored 4 (1+3) points.
The Russian hockey player has been playing for the Capitals since 2005. In 2018, together with the team, he became the winner of the Stanley Cup.
